NUMBER 1 BULLETS: 01-07-15

Each week, we take an early look at the new first issues from Dark Horse, Dynamite, IDW, Image, and Valiant Comics and share our thoughts to let you know what we think you should pick up. Looks like Red Sonja's talkin' 'bout her IXth Generation today!

This week, Sam Moyerman, Joe Kach, and Geoff Deen review Lady Killer #1, IXth Generation #1, and Red Sonja: Vulture's Circle #1.

LADY KILLER #1

Lady Killer #1 (Dark Horse)-

3 out of 5

Gosh, this book is a lot of fun.  A suburban housewife who is also a contract killer?  Nicely done, Joelle Jones and Jamie Rich.  The opening scene of the Avon lady calling is executed quite nicely, with good pacing and comedic timing setting the fun tone.  The artwork matches it perfectly too.  There's a quick jump from the middle to end of that scene that doesn't flow as well as the rest but it gets back to the stuff it does best quickly.  There is a falter later in the book when the housewife's handler comes calling.  You'd think by this time in her career and life there wouldn't be kinks to work out in how and when she got her jobs.  That scene goes on a little too long for my liking.  Thankfully we end the book with a promise to get back to her contract killing roots, this time in a much different outfit. I feel like this will be a four-star mini-series, but this first issue didn't quite meet all the requirements. (Sam)

IXth GENERATION #1

IXth Generation #1 (Image/Top Cow)-

4 OUT OF 5

Spinning right out of July's Aphrodite IX/Cyber Force crossover, the future "Gods" of the Top Cow Universe are back in the spotlight. Okay, so I wasn't too keen on the aforementioned crossover issue, but this one was a bit of an improvement. The back-story is still a bit convoluted, but if you can ignore the nuances, this new direction is pretty cool. Set hundreds of years in the future after the fall of a global Utopia, the IXth Generation Gods are all embroiled in an ongoing war stemming simply from immortal boredom. And now, Aphrodite IX has had enough. Writer Matt Hawkins brings in many of the classic Top Cow Artifacts (the Witchblade, the Bloodsword, the Darkness, etc), which makes for some nice Easter Eggs for classic Top Cow fans such as myself. Top Cow mainstay, artist Stepjan Sejic, isn't doing anything new here, but his style is always solid. If you're a Top Cow fan, this is a must read. But hey, if you're looking for something new in the mainstream, Sci-Fi realm, you should give this book a look, too. (Joe)

RED SONJA: VULTURE'S CIRCLE #1

Red Sonja: Vulture's Circle #1 (Dynamite)-

4 OUT OF 5

The writing pair of Nancy Collins and Luke Lieberman bring us another adventure for Red Sonja in Dynamite's latest number one; Red Sonja: Vulture's Circle.  Opening with all the skin and gore you expect from a tale set in Robert E Howard's Hyboria, this book starts with a bang as an evil demon gains access the world through brutal sacrifice.  When we do meet up with Sonja she is older, finding peace as a teacher of young girls in the arts of war.  However, as is want to happen, evil crosses paths with Sonja again, only this time she has more to protect that just herself.  I found this first issue very engaging and when I reached the end I was ready to read more.  The art by Fritz Casas is really great here.  While the backgrounds might be a bit simple, the character work and colors are fantastic, as is the feeling of movement in fight scenes.  While the story is not breaking any new ground for a Conan/Red Sonja title, giving Sonja others to care for is a nice change instead of just her adventuring as a lone warrior.  This title was simple and just fun to read, definitely one to check out. (Geoff)
